Our first project with the seventh grade was to design a monogram of their name to be etched into the cover of their sketchbook. Even though we are calling it a sketchbook, it really is their place to put sketches, notes, ideas, reflections, and more!
After introducing the basics of Adobe Illustrator, the students began to experiment with fonts and shapes they could use to make their design. Students were given specific criteria on size and location. This was our start to having them understand tolerance and precise measurement. They had to consider where their design would be located on their cover and if their monogram was readable.
Once they were satisfied with their design, we printed out each design on plain paper and had a gallery walk to give feedback on how they might improve their idea. Before we actually started the critiquing process, we showed the Vimeo video: Austin's Butterfly: Building Excellence in Student Work. This is a great little video showing how students can help each other improve their work.
Once they had refined their design, we sent them (the files, not the students) to the laser cutter to be etched. Each book took about ten minutes to etch.
